AROUND THE HORN
- Texas Tech’s roster is a blend of 24 returning lettermen and 20 newcomers – larger than usual in the aftermath of the 2020 season being blunted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Before a UCL injury put him on the shelf for most of 2019 and all last season, Monteverde logged 11 victories between his time at Virginia Wesleyan with 138 strikeouts in 153.2 innings of work. He and Connor Queen are the Red Raiders’ lone seniors.
- This weekend features three games for Texas Tech against ranked opponents – with four Big 12 series looming against teams that begin the season in the polls. SEC coaches pegged the three opponents to finish 1-2-3 in the league’s powerful Western Division (Ole Miss-Mississippi State-Arkansas).
- Red Raiders’ coach Tim Tadlock begins his 9th season 17 victories short of climbing into second place on the program’s all-time win list. He is third with 301 behind Larry Hays (813) and Kal Segrist (3-17).
