Bulldogs Snap Tech’s Nine-Game Win Streak - Red Raider Dugout

Bulldogs Snap Tech’s Nine-Game Win Streak

BILOXI, Miss. – The #11 Red Raiders (10-3) faced off with the #23 Mississippi State Bulldogs (7-6) Tuesday in an opportunity game for both teams. The Bulldogs needed to get right after a season-opening series loss at home to Long Beach State and a loss on the road last weekend at Tulane. Texas Tech was looking to down the defending national champions and make a statement win after a 1-2 start in the State Farm College Baseball Showdown. It was Mississippi State who left MGM Park in Biloxi, MS with a loud 11-5 victory and the Red Raiders hoping for a chance to answer on Wednesday.

Things started off tight with defense and pitching ruling the early innings. Parker Stinnett, who struck out a dozen Red Raiders, struck out the side three times and fanned Tech in order twice in the first and third innings. Stinnett now has 24 Ks in less than 12 innings pitched.

In the bottom of the first, Tech starter Chase Hampton retired the Bulldogs in order as well and a SportsCenter highlight for Jace Jung helped make it possible as he made a diving play on a line drive to shallow center field, flashing the leather and booking the second out of the frame.

Tech made it a 1-0 contest in the third on a Jung RBI double scoring Dillon Carter, who led off the inning by reaching on an error by third baseman Kamren James. The good news would not last, however, as things fell apart for the Red Raiders in the fourth.

A leadoff hit batsman followed by a single and a walk loaded the bases for Mississippi State with no outs. After issuing an RBI walk to Von Seibert Hampton was pulled in favor of Trendan Parish. The freshman fireballer issued a ꓘ to Brad Cumbest but back-to-back-back hits, a sacrifice fly, single, and three-run home run sealed Tech’s fate as the Bulldogs put together a nine-run inning to take a 9-1 lead.

Tech put together seven more hits, including solo home runs from Big 12 and Golden Spikes Player of the Week Parker Kelly, who has now hit his four taters in four days, and Jung, who for the second time this season was one hit shy of the cycle. Ultimately, the Red Raiders were unable to string together the offense needed to mount the comeback and surrendered two more runs in the late innings, including a solo jimmy jack from Luke Hancock.

Five Tech pitchers booked a combined 12 strikeouts but Derek Bridges was the only Red Raider hurler to post a clean outing in his one inning of work. Hampton’s first three innings and the first frame for Shay Hartis were also scoreless.

MGM Park has not been kind to Texas Tech. They faced the Bulldogs there in 2020 in a two-game midweek and dropped both games 3-6 and 2-3 respectively. That was the last baseball played by the Red Raiders that season as it was canceled for COVID-19. Head Coach Tim Tadlock and Director of Baseball Operations Joe Hughes both commented in the pregame about the eeriness that came with coming to the same city, hotel, and ballpark that harkened such a disappointing time in collegiate athletics to follow.

Texas Tech is slated to face Mississippi State again tomorrow at 5:00 pm at the home of the AA Biloxi Shuckers, however, the weather outlook is bleak with rain forecast all day and night, so revenge for the Red Raiders may be thwarted by the weather. If that is the case, Tech will be back in action Friday in Houston in a three-game stand against the Rice Owls. The Friday offering is scheduled for 7:00 pm and will be streamed live on C-USA.TV and with the radio call available on Double T 97.3 FM in Lubbock and on The Varsity Network App.
