AROUND THE HORN
- Texas Tech pitchers bring a 13.1-inning scoreless streak into the game after the shutout on Saturday – the staff’s second in the last three games. Red Raider relievers have allowed just one run in the last 13 innings of work.
- In two games at Minute Maid Park, Texas Tech has racked up 16 runs and 11 of those have come around via the home run. The Red Raiders have clouted four balls over the fence in the Houston Astros’ home digs, all with two outs. Cal Conley did the honors Saturday with his first career grand slam.
- Patrick Monteverde turned in the best starting performance this season by a Tech pitcher with 7 shutout frames when he retired 20 of the 23 batters he faced. He navigated the lone danger spot he encountered with three consecutive strikeouts after allowing a leadoff double in the 3rd inning then balking the runner to third with no outs. He has logged 9 strikeouts in each of his last two starts with no walks either time out. In fact, he has not walked a batter since the 3rd inning of the season opener – a stretch of 15.1 innings.
- Neither Levi Wells nor Ryan Sublette walked a batter, either, giving the Tech staff its second game this season without a base on balls.
- Saturday marked the seventh game in a row – all victories – that the Red Raider offense has generated 8 runs or more. They have also produced at least three extra-base hits in every game of their current hot stretch.
